The Krups Coffee/Spice Mill is a good value for the money. I use it primarily for grinding toasted seeds for Indian dishes (cardomman pods, cloves, cumin seed, peppercorns, coriander seed, mustard seed, chiles etc.). I read the reviews on how the plastic lid will ‘cloud’ from certain spices (e.g., cloves) and that doesn’t matter to me. This grinder isn’t a piece of artwork – it’s a cooking tool. Where I used to spend 20 minutes with a hand-operated mill, the Krups does the same thing in about 5 seconds. It cleans up easily – it’s all self-contained and there aren’t any burrs to clean out – it’s totally blade-operated. In a perfect world, it would grind more precisely (fine to coarse) – but that would require burrs and the cleaning associated with them. So for me and my needs, it’s a good value for the money. The time I saved with the first usage more than pays for the machine.

I have had mine since 1997 (or maybe 1996?), when it cost a hefty or so. I used it almost every day for a long time, for coffee. I got lazy a couple years ago & started using already ground coffee, so it was relegated to a high cupboard.

It has resumed a prominent place in my kitchen, as I have discovered the joy of cooking fresh, organic food for my growing family. I now use it for nuts, seeds and grains! I was using other grinders, then got a clue, pulled this out and VOILA! I am SOO impressed with it’s simple design, speed, durability, versatility AND it’s not as noisy as other grinders/blenders (I do my best work late at night, after the bumpkin is asleep).

In my very practical, no-frills little kitchen, this is a handsome, functional product that I have enjoyed for many years, and it has proved itself to be a great purchase.

I purchased this grinder specifically for pepper grinding which requires fairly fine powder. This grinder works great for this and was exactly what I had wanted. I am sure coffee is good as well, but if looking for an electric spice grinder, this one is one of the best expecially for the money.

At first, i was met with disappointment. I didn’t realize it was going to take a minutes to grind coffee for my french press. But in reality, it takes a long to grind as it does for your water to boil (it is just something you get used to), and this grinder is of excellent quality. For coffee connoisseur wanting a conical burr grinder for under 50 bucks, this is your answer. Its electrical equivalent averages 0 in cost, making this a great money saver. Grinds fine enough for espresso and turkish grind (though turkish takes a long time to grind) and coarse enough for a french press.

A quality grinder makes a difference. Prior to this, i was using a mr. coffee blade grinder, which doesn’t crush the beans just cuts them. The coffee oils were released, and I wasn’t getting the full flavor of the coffee.

This is a fabulous grinder, hands down. Ceramic conical burrs literally last a lifetime, very easy to clean and adjust to very fine or bigger grind. Be aware though, the design of this grinder allows for too much play in the shaft for bigger grinds and becomes inconsistant. Google skerton hand grinder mod for a cheap effective modification that vastly increases stability of the upper burr. You cannot buy a better grinder for espresso. ZERO grind retention, very low static, and the glass catch bin fits a portafilter perfectly for mess free dosing.

I was looking for a coffee grinder to grind coffee for a chemex drip. I have a Mazzer Super Jolly at home for espresso, and it was a pain to dial it back in everytime I wanted espresso. I didn’t want to spend a whole lot on a grinder, so I picked this up.

I am glad I did because it grinds the coffee and I have no complaints with it. Yeah, you get a little workout, but nowadays, a lot of us do. :) It probably takes about 200 cranks to get ~50 grams of coarse ground coffee. It sounds like a lot, but it’s really not bad.

I’m glad I bought this and would recommend it. The seller shipped it and it got to me quickly. The only thing I can think of to make this product better would be include english instructions. I could figure it out from the pictures and playing with it a little, but I can see how people may get confused.

This was my husband’s “BIG” gift for the holiday, and he hasn’t liked a gift this much in a very long time! He likes to think he is a coffee buff, but never had a burr coffee grinder before, and after comparing model after model, name brand after name brand, I chose the Breville BCG800XL Smart Grinder for his gift.

We used to have a nice Cuisinart grinder for years, and it still works well, but the noise it produced was horrifying (and I am NOT exaggerating, the NEIGHBORS even knew we were up when they heard the grinder, we live in a 2 story single family home), and the coffee grounds my husband left all around the machine when he removed the grounds bin was a daily annoyance. That coffee grinder has been cleaned & now happily residing at his office, where they can enjoy the mess and the noise, and a pretty good cup of coffee.

Now you wouldn’t think that switching grinders would have an overall impact in the coffee quality, but did it ever! The coffee tastes so much richer, fuller and more aromatic than before! Even our 23 year old son said “Wow mom, this coffee is good, did you switch beans?” Was he surprised to find out all we did was switch grinders!

NOISE: Minimal, I can’t even hear it when I’m sleeping. Our old grinder running used to be my wake up call upstairs, on the second floor, in the opposite corner of the house! The Breville’s noise is semi~pleasant, like another reviewer stated, and not annoying at all, almost comforting. Happily, the noise just stays in the kitchen now, so only the smell of great coffee wakes me up on the opposite end of the house, YUM!

MESS: Zip, ziltch, nada. I am very pleased that the coffee grounds are housed safely & neatly in the attractive container. No issues with grind mess everywhere.

COST: OK.. can’t find it anywhere below 9. I compared a lot of models out there, the two I ALMOST went with were the Kitchenaid 0~ish dollar model (Kitchenaid reviews weren’t as good, and there was mention all over the internet about bulk and footprint of the machine), and the cheaper Breville around or so, but the grindings all over the place by a couple of reviewers was enough to turn me off of that model. I opted for spending a more, and got a great machine my husband absolutely loves.

SIZE: Smaller than I thought it was going to be, packs a big BIG tower of conical burrs for massive grinding power. Just takes up the same small footprint of our old Cuisinart model, but a bit taller, so no issues there.

LOOKS: Stylish and elegant. It looks like a sophisticated appliance that can take a lot of wear & built to last. We display it proudly next to our old faithful “BUNN” coffee maker.

QUALITY: No flimsy hardware here, it all performs & appears like it will last for years. Backlit display seems very durable as well, and is very nice to aide pinpointing the perfect grind. The conical burrs are super sharp, super tough, and plentiful. My husband was impressed.

CLEANUP: Not difficult. They provide a nice brush that does a good job, esp since we enjoy a dark french roast with some beans being quite oily. Have to clean it more often with those types of beans anyway. No issues here.

GRIND CHOICES: OK.. WOW is all I can say. The description says it all, pick your grind, pick the strength, pick the amounts, whatever. Tons of ways to tweak the grind out to your liking.

HOPPER: AIRTIGHT! Our old Cuisinart wasn’t airtight, but this one is, and holds a whole 1 pound bag of beans with ease. No need to constantly refill!

There are a lot of other attachments & things to do with this, but I hit the highlights for what we use it for. Our morning cup of YUM, and boy did this ever deliver.

CONS: Haven’t found any yet, other than the 9 cost. Only time will tell if this machine is as durable as we think it can be. But since it only had a few reviews, and I always go to Amazon first, I needed to write this to add it to the happy family of 5 star ratings for this grinder.

Hopefully, this will be the last grinder we will ever need for quite a L O N G time. We are amazed at everything about this machine & the coffee it makes.

This is my 2nd conical burr grinder. I used the earlier Breville grinder BCG450XL for a year, and while it gave me reliable daily service, it sure made a mess when removing the grinds container. Breville appears to have listened to its customers and totally redesigned this grinder. The grinds container is a sturdier translucent plastic with a stainless steel lid that seems to have solved the grinds sticking to the lid. There is absolutely no grinds scattering! The bean hopper holds 1 pound which is the size of freshly roasted beans I purchase at the local coffee shop. The ability to choose the size grinds and the amount is just outstanding. As you adjust the grind size to the finer grind, it asks you how many shots? As you adjust to medium or more coarse grinds, it asks you for how many cups? In addition to grinding into the well-designed grinds container, it claims it will also grind directly into your coffee filter. So I put that to the test using my Technivorm mochamaster cone filter holder, but that cone filter holder was too large. However, my Swiss Gold cone filter I use with it fit perfectly by itself, and the grinds poured nicely in it without grind scatter. It also comes with several size portafilter cradle holders to grind directly into your portafilter for espresso drinkers, but I don’t have an espresso machine to test it out.

Breville includes a special brush to easily brush clean the conical burrs every now and then, with easy instructions.

Without need to measure out the coffee beans or the coffee grinds, I no longer need to have coffee scoops laying around. The grinder looks very attractive on my kitchen counter, better looking than the tiny picture reveals. And the grinds themselves? Even, consistent-sized grounds, just what you’d expect from a well made conical burr grinder. All in all, it was well worth the extra expense.

We’ve been using this thing everyday for the last four weeks, since the day it arrived. We use it to grind directly into the porta filter for our espresso machine. Here’s my breakdown:

- The porta filter basket holder is very convenient

- The constructuction is very solid

- I was a bit concerned about the electronic controls before purchasing this, but they’ve worked great so far. There are a number of automatic features that I think certain types of users would really appreciate.

- Since this is the our first burr grinder, I’m not too sure how this compares with in general on loudness to other grinders, but it doesn’t seem too loud. You know when is running, but now I kind of like the sound: it’s now associated with a great cup of coffee.

- For reliability and durability, only time will tell, but it’s worked without hitch for us.

I don’t understand why this grinder had gotten such bad reviews! I purchased this along with my Capresso 303.01 espresso machine. I love this brand, I think they make quality products!

The complaints on noise are ridiculous, it’s a coffee grinder! They’re all loud and noisy, this one is no exception, nor is it the loudest I’ve heard. The settings work great, the timer works great (though most of the time, I just set it on the longest time and manually turn it off when I see that I’ve got enough grinds). I can get everything from fine for espresso to course for my french press. I have no problems with the setting switch moving on me either.

Because this isn’t a conical burr grinder, I do get instances where the beans aren’t falling into the chute and the machine makes that empty noise, but it’s nothing a quick tap on the side doesn’t fix. One reviewer mentioned that they needed a lot of beans to weigh it enough for the beans to fall into the chute. I usually only grind enough for myself, and don’t have a lot of problem with putting in just a few scoops at a time. Again, nothing a quick tap or two to the machine won’t fix. I think this is also fairly common with a lot of grinders, not specific to this machine.

And the clogging. Perhaps having worked at several coffee shops prepped me for this – but I clean out the chute after every use or every other use. It’s not a hassle to me, it takes just a minute to put it next to my sink, jiggle the brush around in there and tap it out over the sink. I do it when I’m waiting for my coffee to brew, and I’ve done this since I got the machine and have not had any issue with clogging.

For the price point, I think this is an excellent and good looking machine that I would recommend. If you truly wanted something that performed at a higher standard, then you need to be willing to invest more money.

I have a love-hate relationship with this Burr grinder. I love the action of the Burr grinder, I love the timer (and agree with the previous comment about the air raid siren), and I love the various grind options, but this particular grinder does not do well with oily beans. After two weeks of owning the grinder, the thing was totally clogged and that wimpy, little brush isn’t going to do it. It took me an hour with a large, stretched out paper clip to get the inside of the grinder cleaned out. Now, I must clean it out every day to keep it clog free. I’m not willing to give up my French Roast coffee beans. To clean, I have to unplug the unit, stick my finger up the shoot to try to get all compacted grounds out of the shoot. Then I stick the little brush up until it can reach into bean cylinder. Because of the ground coffee that stays behind in the shoot, the ground coffee quantity is never the same. I use the timer on the full time (40 seconds) twice to get the quantity that I want. I also weigh it to make sure it’s in the ball park. I would not recommend this product. Grinding coffee shouldn’t be this difficult.

Capresso 580 – Disappointing, March 16, 2009

I recently purchased a new Capresso 580 and I am very disapointed. I would recommend spending more money to get a better functioning burr grinder.

The 3 main problems:

1. The coffee chute below the grinder collects about 33% of the grounds everytime I grind beans. In other words, it seems about 2 teaspoons end up jammed into the chute for every two tablespoons I grind. One reviewer suggested tapping the sides and another recommended grinding to empty (e.g. only fill with the whole beans you need). Neither of these tips worked for me. The only thing that works is a combination of brushing with the supplied brush (which gets out the loose coffee) and then inserting your finger up the chute and scraping out all the compacted grounds. Very messy and extremely wasteful.

2. The fine/course dial shifts towards course as you grind (from the grinding pressure). I keep an eye on it and either push it back when it shifts or just hold it where I like it.

3. The grounds container has a nice tight fit but it can be hard to remove. It takes a firm grip and good finger pressure to pull it out. It is silly because the container has a perfect grip built in, but that perfect grip is pushed inside the housing so it is of no use for removal. There is just a small plastic ridge on a curving surface to get a grip on. If your finger strength is weak or if you have arthritis, forget about using this machine.

Since I have only had the Virtuoso for three months I will not discuss the long-term quality. Because I use it primarily for press pot, drip and small espresso batches I was not looking to get a solid consumer grinder, like the more expensive Rancilio Rocky or Mazzer Mini.

Previously I have owned a Starbucks Barista (the Solis verson, not the newer Saeco Titan verson) and the Capresso Infinity 560 Black. The Barista had a long and happy life, and after performing the hack (see coffeegeek.com), made great coffee and pretty good espresso. The Capresso was excellent for drip & press coffee, but only adequate for espresso. I would happily recommend each of these for people that just want a pretty solid cup of Joe, and do not mind it being slightly heated in the process. The Capresso was still running solidly, so do not infer it died early (it cheerfully grinds my wife’s flax seeds very well now), I just wanted something better for my espresso shots.

After briefly considering the Gaggia MDF I looked at the Virtuoso, mainly for three, important, reasons.

First I was very happy with my Solis/Starbucks grinder, it lasted for over 10 years of heavy use. The hack allowed it to make good espresso. Baratza has been involved with selling the Solis products, and are the designers of the Maestro and Maestro Plus grinder (yes, thats right they are THEIR machines, not Solis). After talking to a few of the locally operated coffee shops, invaluable advice, I was able to learn more about the company.

Second, many of the negative reviews were early in the introduction of the product. What I appreciated, and what the shop owners told me about, is the serious approach to resolving any issues the product has and updating the product itself. Each issue has been addressed, burr design, machine rpm, cleanliness, fineness settings, etc. Important to me was that the later reviews, specially by some of the talking heads, were far better than the earlier versions of the Virtuoso.

Third the current version of the product, it is an affordable (0 in some cases slightly less) grinder with a professional burr, over 40 settings (it can be easily hacked to allow for finer or coarser setting- something I have not needed to do yet. That information is posted in the FAQ of the Baratza website), and lower rpm motor (very important if you do not wish to heat the ground beans, or use a heavy French Roast as I do). It is easy to clean with the supplied brush, but hand wash and rinse well, the washable parts. Absolutely do not wash the container in the dishwasher, unless you wish destroy the anti-static properties of the container, plus it isn’t necessary.

After figuring out what settings work best for my three purposes, I am getting a coffee that is as good as I would get in even some of the better local establishments in Portland. My espresso is not quite as good, but then I do not have Mazzer’s and a thousand dollar plus espresso machine. For my purposes the espresso is far better than I have made on my own in the past.

It may be only a perception, but it seems as though I am using fewer beans as I have in the past as well, important as coffee prices rise. This is a great grinder for its niche, one can get better, but you will have to pay more, and be seriously addicted to Barista quality espresso.

I have had this grinder since March 2006. It grinds magnificently and is extremely well built. It is by far the cleanest grinder (no spewed grinds everywhere) I have had, and I have had MANY. I recently had an issue were a small rock somehow got into the grinder and caused the gears to strip. One call to customer service and they mailed me a replacement no questions asked! Fantastic!!!

As for the negative review prior to this- File it as uninformed. The grind catcher fits into the machine very snug, this is a good thing because it prevents the grinds from flying all over your countertop. The motor is very powerful (unless you try to grind rocks, see above) and grinds the beans with a low pitched growl. This is a terrific grinder with unparalleled customer support. I highy recommend this grinder.

Excellent Grinder with a few qwerks, March 19, 2007

I have had this grinder for over a year. It provides a very uniform grind over a wide range of settings. Recently, I had to adjust the grind calibration settings back to original spec by removing the hood & adjusting one screw. Instructions are on the web site, no problem. The grinder grinds again as when new. Quibbles: 1. When turned to the maximum setting, the timer does not keep the grinder grinding long enough to produce enough coffee for a twelve cup maker. You have to turn the timer again for more coffee. 2. Like a number of burr grinders I have used, the beans occasionally hang up in the feeder so that the grinder is running but no beans are being ground. This is more likely to happen with large and/or “candy” finished dark roast beans. Cleaning helps but does not eliminate this problem. Turning the grind adjustment ring to the max while the grinder is running clears up the stoppage, but it is an annoying glitch. Still, produces great coffee.

First, let me say that I am NOT a coffee connoisseur (heresy, I know). Just a guy with a drip machine and a need for much morning brew. I wanted to grind my own because I hate the flavored coffee taste that I always seem to get from the grocery store grinder. I’m also busy and lazy.

I really like this grinder; and I like it for the same reasons that the guy from Hawaii hated it. I want to spend my morning drinking coffee, not preparing it (one cup at a time? – yeah, right). Pour the beans in (no more measuring), push the button, and before you can fill the maker with water, you have just the right amount of grind ready to go. Yes, there’s a little sticking to the plastic container, but I’ve never had it cause any mess – just tap it on the sink before you remove the lid then pour it into the filter. Grind size and quantity takes a couple of attempts to figure out exactly what you like, but seems pretty consistent once set. Only gave it 4 stars because there are features on the more expensive units that would be nice – a BIG, sealed, hopper that would hold several days worth of beans; and glass grind containers that would completely eliminate the static issue. However, for my use, and for the price, this thing works great. Hope it holds up over time.

I bought the Krups GVX2-14 to replace a Braun burr grinder that I have had for about 8 years. The Braun was still working, but it was getting slow and noisy.

The Krups is a well-engineered, solidly-built unit. It has a range of settings for producing grinds of different fineness consistently from batch to batch. A little experimentation will give you the results you want, and the instruction booklet gives some helpful hints. There is also a setting that controls the length of time the grinder operates before automatically shutting off. This is given in “cups” of beans being ground, and may or may not correspond to your own definition of “cup” with the measure that you use. A little experimentation, though, will allow you to pick a setting that grinds all the beans but doesn’t run long afterward. There is also a separate on/off switch. The unit is pleasantly quiet.

Removing coffee is easy and the grinder comes with a small brush for cleaning out coffee that collects around the opening from the grinding chamber. Cleaning the removable plastic hopper that holds the grounds is likewise easy. I haven’t yet tried cleaning the hopper that holds the whole beans.

My only complaint, and it is a small one, is that a safety interlock prevents the motor from operating unless the cover for the bean hopper is on securely. This seems like overkill to me, since getting your finger into the grinding chamber would be nearly impossible.

All in all I am very pleased with the Krups, and hope it will last as well as my old Braun, which I’ve decided to keep as a back-up.

One other reviewer stated that this grinder is ungodly big – soooo not true. At a little under 10 inches tall, 5 inches deep, and 4 and 1/2 inches wide, this grinder is WAY smaller than my previous Cuisinart Burr Grinder which just recently broke. And the noise! DECIBLES quieter than my Cuisinart!!! It is such a low sound for a grinder. Mainly sounds a little louder than a murmur….First time I grinded coffee, I nearly jumped for joy that the volume was loads lower than my other one! Grinds were also very even. I grind in between medium and fine, and I did not see extremely powerdy grinds or even course grinds. Everything was very even in it’s texture! Great grinder. I love it already!!!

The “Harold Import Coffee Grinder Brush” is imported from you-know-where. After a few washes, a tuft of the bristles came off. The bristles have apparently been glued on, so this Coffee Grinder Brush will not stand up to repeated washings.

I would recommend this Espresso Supply Grinder Brush instead. The bristles on this are tightly secured onto the handle with a metal band (or ferrule) — the same way the bristles on paint brushes are attached.

As of this writing, the Espresso Supply Grinder Brush costs about the same as this brush, and there’s free shipping ;) .

This brush can’t even perform the simple task for which it’s designed. How can it screw up something so straightforward?

1) It sheds bristles like a nervous Labrador. Now I need another brush to clean out the bristles left behind by this brush.

2) The bristles are too soft, so they just kind of languorously spread the grounds around.

3) It’s even harder to clean this brush than to clean with this brush.

If anything good came out of me buying this brush, it is to save you from making the same mistake.

I chose this grind and brew after reading all of the reviews for this and similar machines. Frankly, I am surprised by the negative comments. This is an easy to use machine once it is set up properly (the bean hopper takes a little of effort to snap in). The coffee tastes great and the parts are very easy to clean quickly. While the instruction book is not clear, Cuisinart was very helpful on the phone. The machine does not know how much water you put in, so if you set it to grind coffee for 6 cups and you have 8 cups of water in it, it will process all 8 cups of water. Other than this small quirk, the machine is a small wonder and I do not feel compelled to go out for coffee in the morning. The thermos carafe will keep the coffee quite warm for a few hours, even when the carafe is not warmed up with hot water. Wondering why it took me so long to go ahead and buy this machine. This is the best model; my neighbor has the first generation/second generation machine which is hard to clean and has a large footprint. Save your money and buy this model!

Now that I have had the machine for a month and a half: It requires some cleaning to get the fine grounds that compress and stop the grinder and ground coffee to get into the filter for brewing. I use a bamboo chopstick and a skewer to break up the compressed fine grounds that impede the machine from working properly. (Unplug the machine and put it over the sink area). I also use compressed air to blow out the fine ground particles. Still, this is a small maintenance to allow for great coffee in the AM.

I bought this coffeemaker after returning my Krups KM7000. Overall, I have been pleased with this model, save for a few quirks. The bottom line is that it makes OUTSTANDING, HOT coffee with great convenience in a design that appears very durable. I have NOT had any problems with getting the pieces together and I do not find it complicated on a day-to-day basis whatsoever.

PROS:

-Coffee is full-bodied and flavorful. I use the 4-cup setting with about 3 cups of water and the strength set to strong. This uses the aroma feature, and the coffee is perfect.

-Temperature is perfect, the hottest I’ve tasted from a model like this. The base WARMS THE THERMAL CARAFE when the machine goes on, then goes off when the brew is complete. This may theoretically be eliminating the effect of the cooling of hot coffee by a stone-cold carafe. On the other hand, the carafe is highly insulated and it may be doing nothing. The bottom line is that the temperature is perfect, the coffee is still hot even after adding cold milk. The coffee remains hot for quite a while in the thermal carafe.

-Design is quite nice- it is self contained as opposed to other mill & brew models that have parts that swing around. The design feels very robust, there are no wimpy plastic bits. There is a piece that fits over the grind basket that has a gear which appears to rotate, likely to keep steam out of the grinder.

-It could not be easier to use on a daily basis – all I do is put in THE RIGHT amount of water, put the cover on top of the brew basket, and press program (I have it programmed for the same time every day). After it brews and I pour the coffee, I swing out the basket, pour out the grinds & rinse the basket, rinse the carafe, and I’m ready to go.

-cleaning is simple; I notice others complain but I haven’t had any problems. See above for my daily routine; I’ve been using the brush weekly on the grind spout, it takes two minutes and is not messy.

-The brushed chrome looks great on the counter.

-3 year warranty is reassuring

CONS:

-The grind appears to be too coarse. Other models have a grind control to change the coarseness of the coffee, this one does not. This has improved a little after a few weeks of use, but not completely. Also, I’ve noticed that (through laws of physics) the coarsest part of the grind stays on top, then the finer grounds work their way to the bottom. This is probably wasting a bit of coffee, but once I worked out how much water to use it doesn’t affect the strength. Overall I have not noticed that I am going through coffee faster than before, so I think some of the “coffee wasting” reviews may be somewhat overstated. On first glance it does appear to use a lot of coffee when you are pouring out the grounds, but looking at how many bags I’m going through it doesn’t appear much different.

-The mechanism to pour coffee from the carafe is not perfect; it works ok when pouring out from a mostly full carafe, but to get the last cup or two from the bottom I have to take the top off. If I don’t it drips all over the counter. Taking the top off I can pour it without any mess.

-The water indicator level is on the right side near the back. If you are putting it against a wall on the left it will be fine, but on my counter it needs to be against a wall on the right, so if I need to look at the water level I need to pull the coffeemaker away from the wall. To get around this I have figured exactly how much water to put in from a measuring cup.

THE BOTTOM LINE (again):

The coffee is excellent, and HOT. The design is marvelous. On a day-to-day basis it is extremely easy to use and convenient. The grind is a bit too coarse, but I don’t seem to be going through coffee much faster than before, so this may be a little bit of an illusion. YOU WILL BE ABLE TO ADJUST THE STRENGTH OF YOUR COFFEE USING THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF WATER. I can strongly recommend this coffeemaker if you want hot, convenient, fresh-ground coffee every day. Enjoy!

This unit wastes beans.

According to the user manual, if you fill the coffee bean hopper with 1/2 lb of coffee, you can expect “at least” two – 12 cup brews. I thought this was a bit conservative but it was confirmed when I made the first pot of coffee. I set the machine for 12 cups and watched as almost half of the beans disappeared on the first pot.

I figure it uses almost 1/4 lb of beans to brew a full pot (12 cups of 5 oz coffee). This is about double what would be used if you followed the directions when using a manual grinder (one scoop of beans per cup using the scoop that comes with this coffee maker).

I think Cusinart kept the grind at very coarse level to ensure proper grind flow in the machine. To compensate, they increased the amount of coffee ground. Thus it uses about 4 oz of beans versus 2.5 oz of beans per 10-12 cup pot. It doesn’t sound like much but works out to 60% extra per pot.

I’ve owned the Cuisinart DGB-600BC Grind and Brew Coffeemaker and Melitta Mill & Brew Coffee Maker so this is my third unit brew and grind unit. The two previous units has manual bean fill and comparatively good control on the grind. This unit always grinds very very coarse.

It is well built and I think the 3 year warranty is key because our other Cuisinart grinder motor lasted about 18 months, but its going back because I make about 2 pots/day and this translates into a couple hundred dollars year. Going to try the Capresso 455 or 454.

Update

I’ve got the Capresso 454 and love it. It can grind from super fine up to coarse and makes a great cup of coffee.

I’ve been looking for a replacement to my “Lello 45800/3006 Ariete Burr Coffee Grinder” for at least a year. I’ve probably read a good portion of the reviews for every burr grinder sold by Amazon, and the combined reviews in general left much to be desired for every single one. Finally a few weeks ago I noticed this unit in my search results, and from what I could tell, it was a new release! There were no reviews at all at the time, so frankly there was nothing to dissuade me from purchasing this one. I couldn’t even compare prices, because it seemed Amazon was the only one selling it at the time. In addition, the black/stainless styling matched my new coffee maker (Cuisinart DCC-1200 12-Cup Brew Central Coffeemaker). So I ordered it, received it today, and I just had my first cup of coffee using its coffee grinds.

I’m no expert on coffee. But I must say this is the easiest coffee grinder I have ever used. There is an LED display alongside a button allowing me to select number of cups. The LED display also shows the selected grind setting dialed on the hopper. First I pressed the button to select number of cups, then I adjusted the dial to select the grind setting. Finally, I pushed Start and let it go. I think the noise level is about half that of my previous grinder, but that’s not saying much. The LED display counted down the seconds until completed. I was surprised by the amount of output, which seemed much greater than from my old grinder. But in retrospect I don’t think this was due to this unit using more beans. I noticed when I poured the grinds into my coffee filter that the grinds were much looser than I’m accustomed to. I think my previous grinder had been compressing the grinds and there were always clumps. I did not notice any clumps in the output from this unit, and the grinds seemed very even and loose.

Now that I’ve used the grinder several times, I must say it does spill some grinds onto the base when I remove the bin unless I work the grinds out somehow. I now gently lift the entire unit about an inch off the counter and gently tap it down to release the remaining grinds into the bin. I then remove the bin and tap the lid of the bin a few times before removing the lid. This just minimizes mess and waste.

The grind setting of 6 seems perfect for the relatively dry beans I used this time, even though I used it for auto-drip coffee, not espresso. For oily beans such as Starbucks, 7 might be the optimum grind setting.

Two other differences between this grinder and my previous one were the lids, one for the hopper and one for the grinds bin. In both cases, the lids for this unit snap shut, whereas the ones for my previous unit just nestled precariously on top of the respective containers.

One curious note: there is no way to turn the LED off, which concerned me because it is very bright and I don’t want the display to burn out and quit working any time soon. But I think this is why there is no switch: within the entire (tiny-but-informative) manual for this unit, there is only one sentence in all caps: “UNPLUG FROM OUTLET WHEN NOT IN USE…”. So there we have it — that is why there is no on/off switch; the manufacturer expects us to keep the unit unplugged when we aren’t actively using it. In response to the other reviewer’s comment on needing to reprogram the number of cups after plugging the unit back in, it takes about 4 or 5 seconds to cycle through the number of cups (the default is 12 cups) until the desired selection is displayed, an extremely minor issue.

In spite of it’s brevity, the manual is very descriptive and I found it sufficient. It provides a very detailed set of instructions for cleaning. The bean hopper, hopper lid, grind chamber, and grind chamber lid are all dishwasher-proof (top shelf). Then it also provides instructions for removing and cleaning the burr unit.

A dual-purpose scoop/stiff brush is provided.

Regarding it’s appearance, it actually looks even nicer in my opinion than my new coffee maker. The body has a sleek, brushed stainless steel appearance, and the blue LED is very attractive when it is on.

The grind chamber is not made of glass, but I live in Florida; dry air here is almost a luxury and I rarely have problems with static anyway. Problems with static are dealt with the same as with any other grinder. I personally minimize loose grinds spilling everywhere by the following method. First I remove the hopper lid, then I cover the top of the hopper with the filter (opened wide, placed top down), then I turn the filter/hopper over and place it into the cup, keeping hold of the hopper which is now upside down. Excellent coffee mill! Much quiter than any of my previous 4 mills/grinders. Also works faster and less “burn” taste from grounds. Very concsistent grinding. Also the top lid with the fill slot make pouring into filter easier versus my other mills had the window or slot on the side of the bin. Nice improvement

2 comments that are not issues but to be aware of. As it has an Blue LCD display there is always a blue light on, so for some this could be good and others a nuisance. Also you must keept the bin and slots clean as any slight grounds in the bin area will cause some minor leakage

I recently had to replace my Capresso Burr grinder (which I had had for over 5 years) and wanted to make sure the replacement would make me as happy, if not happier, than my old grinder.

The Cuisinart Programmable Conical Burr grinder was my ultimate choice, after reading several reviews and doing plenty of research. I love the light-up LCD display, the start/stop switch (for those mornings when I’m not quite awake and start the grinder before I realize there’s not enough beans in the hopper), the ease of adjusting the grind, and the overall design. While I had considered purchasing a cheaper product, (my Capresso was only around afterall) I am very glad I went with this product. We grind our coffee fresh every morning, and thus far have been very pleased with how this unit performs.

The only reason I did not give this unit 5 stars is b/c it, like other Burr grinders, has a problem with static. I live in Houston, a VERY humid climate, but even the moisture in the air doesn’t keep the static down enough, which can be bothersome. It means a bit of clean-up after every use, but the extent of the static is SIGNIFICANTLY less with this unit than my Capresso grinder, and the clean-up on this unit is far easier.

I highly recommend this product to anyone who wants something more reliable and consistent than a simple grinder, but doesn’t want to spend a million dollars on a burr grinder.

I ordered this product when it had no reviews, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Boy, was I happy when I received this grinder. It is probably only half as loud as my former Cuisanart Burr Grinder. It is also heavy, and not at all flimsy, and has a cord wind space at the bottom. The push button is included in the top so no accidental use when removing ground coffee. We prefer a finer grind to our coffee so this is a very effective machine for us. We also go with coffee manufacturer recommendations of more grounds per cup to avoid bitterness, than most people typically use. It supplies the exact amount we use, beautifully, with our preferred grind. For us, it it about a 20-25 second grind cycle, but we haven’t experienced any heating of grounds, or off tastes, as a result. The only thing which may concern some, is there is often a round of ground coffee under the blade. This doesn’t bother us, and is easy to dump or losen with a finger or brush, without touching the blade. Husband is so impressed he wants another for nuts and spices, and I want another “just in case.” Extremely pleased.

Great machine. I gave it a 4/5 only because I think the blade could be a little bit sharper but you can’t beat the price and it still does a stand up job grinding coffee beans for my press. I like that it has an area underneath for the cord since I don’t keep my appliances plugged in all the time as this wastes electricity, which is bad bad bad for the environment :)
